Head, Technology Development and Research
Position:
This position provides vision, leadership, and direction for the Georgia Tech Library and Information Center’s newly formed Technology Development and Research Department (TDR). The department’s purpose is to build effective information systems and tools to facilitate scholarship, research, and teaching and learning in a digital environment. It will do this by promoting innovation in technology and facilitating cooperation among the Library’s internal and external partners. The department engages in technology and application development activities in areas such as resource discovery and access, campus – library technology integration (i.e. learning management systems), repositories and digital collections, personalization, and other library services, while utilizing emerging technologies and engaging in applied research to meet Library goals. It is presently comprised of two application developers and one librarian, with future expansion projected. The department will collaborate closely with the Library’s Systems, Digital Initiatives, Archives, Acquisition Services, Information Services, and other departments. The TDR Head reports to the Associate Director for Technology and Resource Services.
Responsibilities:
The Head of Technology Development and Research is responsible for articulating a digital infrastructure development vision and strategy. This position promotes the vision throughout the library and campus; identifies opportunities to support library initiatives and collaborates with faculty and groups on campus (i.e. Office of Information Technology, Educational Technology, Distance Learning, academic units) to undertake information and learning technology-related projects; maintains awareness of trends in data and information management, search technologies, digital preservation, repository development, content exchange, and related areas; initiates research and development proposals for internal and external entities; fosters creative inquiry while managing a portfolio of projects; conducts feasibility and requirements analyses for potential projects; serves as lead on select team-based projects; monitors project progress; identifies deliverables; resolves issues between partners; assesses project success using outcomes-based evaluation; ensures that standards and best practices are followed and that documentation is created; and supervises department staff.
Current projects involve development with: DSpace (including Manakin), Fedora (future), LOCKSS (MetaArchive Cooperative), Sakai, Evergreen (open source integrated library system [future]), enhanced OpenURL link resolving (Umlaut), web localizing (WAG the Dog), meta-searching (MetaLib, LibraryFind), and the Galileo Knowledge Repository (statewide institutional repository). The GT Library-developed software, Umlaut, won the 2007 OCLC Research Software Award and our web localization software, WAG the Dog, was runner-up in 2005. s degree. Computer Science or related field preferred.
Qualifications:
Required: Master’s degree in library and information science (ALA accredited) or equivalent; minimum five years of experience in an academic information technology setting; demonstrated ability to take initiative and manage complex projects in a diverse professional team environment; prioritize work within the library’s strategic plans and digital infrastructure development vision; knowledge of issues and trends in digital library development, data and information management, library systems and technologies using established and emerging metadata schema, search technologies, digital preservation, repository development, content exchange and related areas; experience working with a range of applications and emerging technologies in the areas outlined above; demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects, and services; excellent skills involving problem-solving, team-building, and project management; excellent visual, oral, and written communication and collaboration skills; experience in staff supervision and goals setting.
Desired: Experience in a range of information technology activities such as: database development and management tools; XML; Java; metadata manipulation, crosswalks, and validation; web crawling and harvesting tools; server and network administration (LINUX).
Salary and Benefits:
Salary and level of appointment are based on qualifications and experience. Minimum salary is $65,000. Librarians are members of the General Faculty and are non-tenured. The benefits package includes 21 days vacation, 12 paid holidays, 12 days sick leave, health/dental insurance options, and retirement options including TIAA/CREF. Visual and Digital Materials Archivist
Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to collect and preserve architectural drawings and to foster a relationship with the College of Architecture. The secondary purpose is to collect and preserve photographs and digital materials. Reporting to the Head, Archives and Records Management Department, the visual and digital materials archivist at Georgia Tech is responsible for identifying and collecting visual (architectural drawings and photographs) and digital visual materials. Arrange and describe visual (architectural drawings and photographs) and digital materials. Create finding aids and other descriptions in appropriate mark up text and post them to the website. Manage digital visual materials (architectural drawings and photographs) stored in the Archives’ dark archive. Provide reference service on the Archives Department reference desk. Develop processing plan in coordination with other departmental archivists to determine appropriate levels of description and analysis. Maintain accurate and timely information on copyright pertaining to the use of visual materials. Provide and supervise production of images for patron use.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science, master’s degree in archival administration, or equivalent advanced degree. Minimum three years of archival experience with visual material (photographs and/or architectural drawings) processes. Requires working knowledge of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Dublin Core, Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), as well as other related archival descriptive standards; knowledge of the preservation needs of archival collections; experience providing reference assistance. Understanding of issues related to digital archival materials such as digital conversion and intellectual property issues. Also requires ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing; excellent organizational skills, accuracy attention to detail; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment; supervisor skills; and demonstrated interest in professional activities. Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes.
Preferred: MLIS or equivalent degree with architecture-related experience. Knowledge of preservation needs of architectural drawings and numerous copying processes.
Salary and Benefits:
Appointments will be made at the Archivist I (entry-level) or Archivist II level. Appointment level and salary are based on qualifications and experience. Minimum salary for Archivist I is $42,000. Library Associate I (Acquisitions, Electronic Resources)
Responsibilities:
Responsible for creation and maintenance of electronic journal records in electronic resource management (ERM) system; order record creation and maintenance; facilitate electronic invoice processing; process title changes; and assist with SFX maintenance and updates and metasearch product implementation and maintenance. Activate and deactivate electronic journal titles in SFX to reflect the library’s holdings for the public; create and maintain order records for electronic journals; load, process, and maintain electronic invoices; assist Electronic Resources Coordinator with processing license agreements for electronic resources, and other duties, including special projects, as assigned. Independent judgment and analysis required to correctly identify electronic journal links; to update records in an electronic resource management system; to enter and update order records for journals; to initiate and process title changes; and to set priorities. Work cooperatively and effectively with other Library staff and serve as a resource for electronic journal and serial questions, particularly in the absence of the Electronic Resources Coordinator; effectively communicate with vendors and publishers; be responsive to instruction, direction and performance feedback from supervisor. This position requires - effective oral and written communication skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. The incumbent must have demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment, and the ability to work with multiple projects and balance multiple priorities simultaneously.
Education:
Technical Diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Two (2) years college course work or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s Degree desired.
Experience:
Four or more years of job related experience. Preferred qualifications include prior working experience in library and/or information technology customer service environment. Computer skills: Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Windows and productivity software, especially word processing and spreadsheet applications; experience with an integrated library system - preferably Endeavor Voyager; experience with managing electronic resources, especially with an OpenURL link resolver.
Hiring Range:
$30,770 to $38,450

Library Associate I (Architecture Library)
Responsibilities:
As part of the Architecture Library team, this position has primary responsibility for book collection maintenance of the library stacks, reference, and reserve collection. Maintain inventory of collections; survey collection to identify damaged books that need to be repaired. Responsible for circulation services in the library, charging and discharging materials, placing recalls using Voyager system, providing information assistance to library users by locating resources in catalog, electronic databases and journals. Provide assistance to library users in using computers, scanners, large format printer, and copy machines. Create computer accounts and re-set user passwords. Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising of student assistants. This position requires effective oral and written communication skills, analytical skills and attention to detail. The incumbent must have demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment, and the ability to work with multiple projects and multiple priorities simultaneously. The incumbent must be a self-starter who is organized, detail oriented with a strong customer service orientation.

Sunday, noon to 8:00pm
Tuesday – Thursday 11:00am to 7:30pm
Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm.
Education:
Technical Diploma, Associate's Degree, two year’s college course work or equivalent combination of education and experience required. A Bachelor's Degree in education, architecture, or art history is strongly preferred.
Experience:
Two or more years of work experience in an academic or public library. In addition, knowledge of LC classification system, proficiency with Microsoft windows and productivity software - especially word processing and spreadsheet applications including Excel. Knowledge of Voyager circulation system. Leadership experience desired. Selection process will include passing a pre-employment background screening.
Hiring Range:
$31,690 to $39,600
